Let’s talk a little about accessories and how they can be used to personalize your work attire.

In a world where conformity dominates, I encourage my clients to wear a single item that we will call a "differentiator," which is unique to them and tells a story. I wear my father's ring; it's obviously not mine, as it doesn't bear my initials. This ring always reminds me of the values my father upheld and the respect he had for humanity. I am happy to share stories about him with anyone who notices this ring.

Pierre Trudeau, as I have often mentioned, wore a rose on his lapel as a mark of distinction and to display his difference. This rose added a touch of class and a unique character to this man, who nevertheless symbolized elegance on his own.

Sometimes it can be a sentimental object, but it can also be something more intentional or strategic. One of my clients always wears a fountain pen that his girlfriend (now his wife) gave him when he graduated from law school. Rather rare these days, this fountain pen always leads to conversations reflecting his family values and his deep personality. Another one of my clients is a bankruptcy trustee. He is a likable man working in an antagonistic field, and he regularly faces tense discussions. He found an unusual way to defuse the inevitable tensions that arise during bankruptcy meetings: he wears red Mickey Mouse suspenders that he lets show and tugs on when the conversation intensifies. He usually provokes a few laughs, which helps calm the atmosphere.

The differentiator must be both subtle and reflect a unique aspect of your personality. That said, it should never overpower your outfit. I will never forget that elegant financial advisor who came to my office to discuss business. He wore a refined suit, beautiful accessories, etc. I don't remember what he said, but I vividly remember his bright pink socks that caught my attention throughout his presentation. Your differentiator should give an idea of your personality and the image you want to project; the type of elements that instill confidence in your clients.
